What's New in HR Technology? October 1999

The market is constantly inundated with new products. Often these products are based on different application of existing technologies, and occasionally some new technologies. The group below represents a large number of the former, and a few of the latter. BOOKS

HRMS Book - Together with fellow-author Glenn Rampton, regular CHRR contributors Al Doran and Ian Turnbull saw their first book entitled: "Human Resources Management Systems " sell out, so it's been reprinted by Carswell (ISBN: 0-459-56369-6). Both Ian and Al are Directors of IHRIM, and of CCHRA - The Canadian Council of Human Resource Associations.

IHRIM -- IHRIM, the International Association for Human Resource Information Management, is holding it's annual Fall Conference and Vendor Show at the Toronto Sheraton on November 17-19th. The largest show of its kind in Canada with over 70 booths, the theme of this year's Conference is:

Knowledge Management

Information Overload? - The Canadian National Research Council announces that the latest version of PC Docs/Fulcrum knowledge management solution has Clustifier, software that performs "result list clustering". Clustifier works by searching across an enterprise and categorize results into usable clusters along with the number of documents, key words, and the titles of the first several documents in each.

eBUSINESS

HR On-Line - PeopleSoft recently delivered PeopleSoft e7.5, an enterprise-class eBusiness backbone that provides a basis for the PeopleSoft Business Network (PSBN). PSBN provides a web-based foundation through a roles-based portal for its entire suite of Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) solutions, including the ground-breaking HR product.

PeopleSoft also unveiled PeopleSoft 8 featuring an easy-to-use, ultra-thin HTML client designed to provide widespread access to the software.

Performance Management

On-Line Appraisals - CompStar HR Solutions of Salt Lake City announces CompStar Appraiser Plus 360 SQL Server Web Edition. The SQL version allows on-line appraisals via the internet, as well as multi-rater for self, peer, group and supervisor reviews.

One interesting side benefit is an alert feature that alerts managers of potentially biased or illegal remarks.

Assess Values & Job Satisfaction - Keepers Inc of Toronto uses programs called Leadership 360 and Career Values Explorer to help retain top talent. The former facilitates 360 degree feedback while the latter points out areas of dissatisfaction before they grow to cause turnover.

HR Activity Centre - Softscape of Massachusetts announces their web-based Human Resources Central Activity Centre that incorporates the various components of their AchievementPlus performance management, 360 multisource feedback, personnel reporting, training & development, requisition management, and the two newest modules: compensation management, and succession planning.

Staffing

The web is today's tool for recruitment, and the large number of products listed below represent just some of the multitude of offerings. A Massachusetts technology market research firm estimates that 96% of all organizations will use the internet for staffing by 2001. Meanwhile, old standby technologies such as interactive voice response (IVR) show that they still have a place in an organization's tool bag.

Complete Applications On-Line -- One On One of Toronto have relaesed a new version of their Personnel Advantage Database which provides standardized forms on the web for applicants to complete in response to job postings. One On One also market skills assessment, training and contact management software.

Online Career Network - Monster Board Canada, a product of TMP Worldwide announces Monster.ca, a new online career network. Monster.ca also offers a free newsletter, enhanced resume building, privacy options and a targeted industry and career levels.

Improve Staffing Process - IT Staffing announces AppTracker, recruiting tools accessed through common web browsers. It helps with collecting, screening, interviewing and hiring quickly and easily.

Interactive Charting - Entraspan of San Diego has completely revamped it's Interactive OrgChart 2.1. Variable security, the ability to display photographs, full-colour charting, the software can be stand-alone or accessed through common web-browsers.

Training

Education Management - A subsidiary of Agresso Group in Norway, Agresso Corporation of Vancouver announces InTuition, a fully integrated education management system including student information, faculty management, financials, HR, payroll and reporting aimed at the higher education market. Using modules separately or in an integrated fashion, institutions can benefit from simplified processes, reduced fees, user-defined change and enhanced services.

Time & Attendance, Leave Management, Scheduling

Integrate Timesheets/Expenses - Journyx announces the release of FREETIMESHEET, an integrated timesheet and expense report solutions portal. Workgroups and small firms of five users or less can use the intuitive web browser for free to complete and approve forms, and includes workflow features. Larger groups pay a fee per user.

JournyxTIME is another product which incorporates IBM's WebSphere and DB2 databases. JournyxTIME allows users to customize time entry screens, and to track time against projects.

Journyx, headquartered in Austin, TX holds an estimated 68% market share in web-based time, project and expense tracking.

Link Time to PeopleSoft - Simplex Time Recorder announces WinSTAR LiquidLINK, a product that automatically synchronizes the WinSTAR Time & Attendance System with PeopleSoft. The interfaces also allow all other Simplex data collection technology such as badge readers, biometric hand readers, and telephony to feed data into PeopleSoft.

Also added to WinSTAR T&A is a new benefits accruals function which eliminates the need to manually calculate accrued hours.
