What's New in HR Technology?

The market is constantly inundated with new products.  Often these products are based on different application of existing technologies, and occasionally some new technologies.  The group below represents a large number of the former, and a few of the latter.  The authors have relied on information provided by the vendors, and mention here does not imply any endorsement or recommendation, nor is it intended to cover all of the news releases and/or new or revised product offerings since the last column on this subject.

BOOKS

IHRIM Book Series – IHRIM Press announces the fourth in a new book series by the International Association of Human Resources Information Management (IHRIM):

HAND-HELD DEVICES

Any lingering doubts that you may have had about the viability of hand-held devices should be rapidly disappearing.  In addition to the announcements listed here there are now human resources information management systems that will run on a hand-held device.

SCHEDULING – AEC Software (Sterling, VA, USA) announce the release of Version 7.0 of their FastTrack Schedule software for Mac or PC.  Also available for Palm hand-helds, the new version streamlines the project planning process for both novice and professional project managers.

FastTrack Schedule 7.0 includes all of the features that you would expect in a project scheduler, including Gantt charts, Critical Path identification, Quicklook, dynamic filters, and task dependency.  Existing schedules can be duplicated and/or synchronized, and then shared with various users via the infrared feature offered by Palm.

WORKFORCE MANAGEMENT – TENROX (Laval, Quebec) announces Projeca Mobile, a wireless optimization and change management solution.  In partnership with Bell Mobility, the Projeca eWorkforce suite allows mobile users to get project information and status without having to go back to the office.

TIME KEEPING

New Time Capture Terminals – Simplex (Westminster, MA, USA) announces a new line of time and data terminals that run on Ethernet networks, thus taking advantage of the current network.  The new Cambridge Clock 2000 series supports a variety of input devices including bar code wands, laser scanners, proximity readers, and Wiegand readers.

In addition to traditional time punches, the terminals can be used by employees to review time information, work schedules, or receive specific messages from their supervisor.

IHRIM -- IHRIM, the International Association for Human Resource Information Management, has announced it's annual Fall Conference and Vendor Show at the Eatons' Centre Marriott in Toronto on December 2nd – 4th .  The largest show of its kind in Canada with over 65 booths, the theme of this year's Conference is: "e-Business – the HR Challenge".

The shortage of staff – especially knowledge workers -- has made this functional area hot, hot, hot, and the number of products listed here and generally available reflect that:

Recruitment + Competency Screening Tools – Workopolis (Toronto) recently introduced the new Workopolis Screening Room Competency module.  The tool allows recruiters to look beyond the traditional experience list to review competencies, which are predicters of success.

It comes loaded with over 1,000 established profiles and 20,000 competencies (developed by Lamon+Stuart+Michaels, Toronto), and can hold your organization-specific competency profiles as well.  The tool allows for competencies to be weighted, and integrates the resultant candidate rankings with other ScreeningRoom tools.

Web-based Hiring – E-Cruiter.com Inc (Ottawa) announces the launch of E-Cruiter Version 3.0 an ASP-based solution offering a web recruiting portal, including additional third party posting capabilities, referral, and agency tracking.  E-Cruiter has agreements with a number of job boards including Workopolis, Monster, headhunter, Campus and Worklink.

Resumes from Anywhere – Recruitsoft (Quebec City and San Fransisco, CA, USA) and MagnaWare (Santa Cruz, CA, USA) announce an alliance to provide Recruitsoft's WebTop customers with one-click access to MagnaWare's RezPrise product that automatically processes resumes from any source: web, email, fax, and hardcopy in multiple languages (and using multi-byte Asian characters).

WebTop is an internet application that supports every aspect of the recruitment process, from requisition management, skills-based profiling, automatic candidate background checking, and candidate sourcing – including labour exchanges.  Candidates can be searched for using a web-browser, or integrated into a HRMS.

Pre-Employment Screening – PeopleWise, part of the Lexis-Nexis Risk Solutions Group of Dayton, Ohio has introduced PeopleWise.net, a web-based version of their pre-employment screening software.  Any web browser can be used by HR generalists and recruiters and/or hiring managers to access pre-employment screening reports anytime, anywhere.

The web applications features a simplified security checking process, status of screening requests, and centralized control with decentralized access.

Do It Yourself Resume Builder  – Career Builder of Reston, VA, USA (CareerBuilder) and Individual Software (ResumeMaker) jointly announce a resume and cover letter writing software product called ResumeBuilder.  Including easy-to-use guides and hundreds of pre-written paragraphs, ResumeBuilder also offers job searching, resume management, and resume posting tools.
