Recruiting and Staffing on the Internet - Part 3

"There is a "Gold Mine" out there"

(This article is one in a series of articles on how to set up an HR Corporate Home Page. This article concentrates on the advantages of recruiting and staffing on the internet).

Today we are going to talk about "mining" the internet for job information. This will bring together some of the topics we have talked about in previous columns and give us a check list for getting the most out of the information and resources available out there.

What you need to get the job done:

1. Internet access
2. e-mail address
3. your own corporate homepage;
  • company history,
  • company overview,
  • company future plans
  • company direction,
  • key people in the organization
  • Company Job Opportunities, on the Front Page
4. Strategies for Posting jobs:
  • posting critical jobs
  • on the corporate home page, prominently
  • on a few career hubs like Career Mosaic, Career Connect, Job Match
  • industry specific sites (e.g., MedHunters for HealthCare)
  • industry associations (e.g. IHRIM for HRMS jobs)

5. Publish your company employer profile (mirror of company homepage) on career hubs. That way more job seekers will find your company by searching on key words.

6. Negotiate reciprocal agreements to link your site with all your suppliers and/or clients (Check PeopleSoft partners at http://www.peoplesoft.com)

7. Link back to homepage from career hubs.

8. Post your openings on Usenet, an area with thousands of topic areas including hundreds of job posting sites, such as tor.jobs and ont.jobs.

9. In hard to fill jobs, post short summaries about the job opening, pointing to your web site with all the details to Industry listservers. For example, trying to fill a key HRMS implementation position, post a short note to HRIS-L. Note: Listservers are discussion groups and there is a low tolerance for frequent and lengthy job postings, where such postings are common and expected on Newsgroups such as on.jobs.

10. Build your own database of resumes for recruiters to work with.

11. Build strategy for communication with people into your resume database

-example would be regular updates via e-mail on what is going on with growth, and development and new opportunities.

12. Resume mining on the net
  • Go get resumes that fit your company
  • Go get resumes that have skill sets that your company needs
  • Communicate with this group of people about the opportunities available at your company.
How do your mine the Internet for resumes?

Here is a step by step process:

1. Choose a search engine; try HotBot for your searches, Yahoo, or Dejia News.

2. Select the types of skills your want in the resumes (people) you are looking for: example: do a search for Oracle programmers that live in Ontario. The search was "oracle ON."

3. Add a filter to your search for resumes by typing the singular "resume."

4. Try to filter or screen out company and commercial sites by choosing the "modify" button on HotBot.

5. Again under modify select the drop down box and choose "must not contain"; now in the box type "opportunities resumes classified." This should adequately filter out most sites and leave you with a search of actual resumes of both experienced and currently enrolled college students.

6. Remember to experiment with all the words in this search; for example: change "oracle" to "C++"; change "ON" to "Ontario".

7. Limit your search by time; choose date and select the "updated in the last six months" - now you're resumes will be recent ones that are from people who are somewhat interested in making a change.

8. Capture resumes and put them into a database and start communicating on the phone, in writing, and via e-mail

9. Select a few of these prospects and try video conferencing. How? Have your candidate available at a specific time for an interview; buy a camera and software for about $300; overnight the camera to the prospect and have them install the camera on their computer. Have a real interview. If all goes well in the video interview you can invite the candidate to a second interview on-site. You will have used technology and saved money to make a strong hire for your company.

Good luck.
