   J. S. Redpath, a global mining giant headquartered in the city, was honoured Friday with The Nugget Business of the Year Award.
This award is really for our employees," said senior vice-president David Hansman, crediting the company's 4,400 workers at offices and sites around the world for making the firm a success.
The top prize handed out during the North Bay and District Chamber of Commerce's annual gala event at the Clarion Resort Pinewood Park, the business of the year award was given to Redpath in recognition of the company's exceptional performance and community contributions.
Chamber president Glenn Cundari said the world-leading mining firm has not only shown a strong commitment to the community, employing hundreds of people, but has also proven to be an industry pioneer.
Cundari pointed to the company's unveiling earlier this year of the Redbore100, the newest, largest and most powerful raise drill in the world -- conceived, designed and built in North Bay.
Founded by James Redpath in 1962, the company, which builds mines, moved to North Bay from Val-d'Or, Que., three years later.
Hansman said Redpath chose North Bay because of its central location, nearby Northern mining communities and a short jaunt to Toronto, home to many firms and an international airport. In addition, he said the city was considered a great place for employees because of its lakes and quality of life characteristics.
It's just a nice place to live," said Hansman, who joined the firm in 1976 when it operated mainly at a regional level.
He said the company has come a long way since its humble beginnings and is now operating in six different languages in 40 countries around the globe.
He said the firm expanded this year into South Africa and Australia and had already working in places such as Mongolia and Chile.
We now refer to North Bay as our world headquarters," said Hansman, noting the company employs approximately 200 people in the city.
Despite recent financial troubles for the industry, Hansman said the firm will also soon begin work on its new office building in the city at the corner of Oak Street and Memorial Drive.
He said the new building is a demonstration of the company's commitment to the future.
