Al Doran, CHRP

Al Doran is President of Phenix Management Int'l, a Toronto-based management consulting firm specializing in the effective use of technology in the management of human resource information.

Until April 1996, Al Doran was Director, Human Resources Management Information and Payroll at York University, Toronto Ontario. Al has 30 years of experience in the design, development and application of computer-based information systems with particular emphasis in personnel, payroll and human resource planning functions.

In June of 1996, Al was awarded the prestigious Summit Award, the highest award of recognition by the International Association for Human Resource Information Management. Al is the first and only Canadian to receive this special award.

Al is the co-author of the 1997 HRMS book, published by Nelson Canada as part of their HRM Series. This book has sold out and has was reprinted by Carswell and sold out again. Al teamed up with his fellow authors to write a new book, "HRMS: A Practical Approach", which was published in January 2000. Check the new web site at http://www.hrmsbook.com. This book is becoming the "HRMS bible" of students and practitioners alike, and has been found by many non-technical HR practitioners to be the missing link in bringing together functional requirements and automated solutions.
The 3rd edition of this popular book was published in early 2007.

Al has written many articles for the Canadian HR Reporter and is a regular contributor to the IHRIM.link magazine, The IHRIM Journal, The HR Professional, Dialogue, and other industry publications dealing with the effective use of technology in Human Resources and Payroll.

Mr. Doran is Past President of the Canadian Association of Human Resource Systems Professionals (CHRSP) and is Past-President of the Ontario Chapter of the International Association for Human Resources Information Management (IHRIM).  Al served as a board member of both IHRIM and of the Canadian Council of Human Resource Associations (CCHRA). Al is a founder and serves on the board of directors of The HRMS Professionals Association.

Al is a regular speaker at human resource seminars, speaking to the Human Resources Professional Association of Ontario (HRPAO); to various chapters of IHRIM and to their annual conferences. Al has conducted a number of conference sessions and workshops for the International Quality and Productivity Centre (IQPC), The Strategy Institute, The Conference Board of Canada, The Canadian Institute, and The Canadian and American Payroll Associations. Al spoke on the future of Human Resource Systems as a keynote speaker to the Australian Human Resource Institute and has spoken at McDonald's Hamburger University in Chicago. Al was the key note speaker at the e-HR conference in Beijing China in 2003.
